THE GREATEST RECOVERY STORIES NEVER TOLD

Featuring the real-life stories of 10 people in recovery from opioid addiction whose lives have been saved by treatment with the long-acting opioid medications methadone and buprenorphine. Despite these medications being the most effective approach to opioid addiction, these stories are rarely told because of the tremendous stigma associated with them. People receiving these evidence-based, FDA-approved medications usually tell as few people as possible about their treatment, sometimes not even their doctor or their partner. Because of the stigma, medications for addiction treatment (MAT) are tremendously underutilized. This book showcases engaging stories of recovery using MAT in patients’ own words, thereby pushing back against these negative stereotypes in the hopes that more people will avail themselves of these life-changing medications. The opioid crisis continues, albeit with a slight decline recently, and is even more dangerous with the introduction of fentanyl to the illicit drug supply; accordingly, this book is timely, important, and even urgent.

Meet the Author

David M. Novick MD is a physician who specialized in addiction medicine, gastroenterology, and internal medicine (board-certified in all) before his retirement. His addiction medicine experience includes managing patients on methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone. He practiced gastroenterology with a special interest in liver disease for 30 years with Digestive Specialists, Inc., in Dayton, Ohio.

“As an advocate for people to have colonoscopies (an earlier one could have saved my husband’s life), I found this book to be ‘just what the doctor ordered.’ Dr. Novick uses knowledge and humor to raise consciousness of the need for screening. If one life is saved through this book, then Dr. Novick’s commitment and hard work will have been worth it. I think it will help many.”

Kate Carlisle

A Badgering but Loving Advocate for Colonoscopies

"I wish I had this book before my colonoscopy, as it would have assuaged my fears about how a colonoscopy will feel (like nothing!) and calmed my nerves about what I might say under sedation (which thankfully wasn't much)."

“Despite all the publicity, too many people do not get colon cancer screening or other needed care. Dr. Novick’s book uses clear medical writing to help people overcome their fears.”
Annie Roboff

“Dr. Novick's book is the third in recent years to clearly explain the digestive system. Gut brilliantly explains how it works, and Gulp gives the fascinating back-stories, but this book gives you the elements of successful diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Novick's expertises provides authentic and accessible infromation regarding gut health. This is a book everyone should read.”

"The gut is one of the most important parts of our body. Keeping it in shape is a key to staying healthy. I am delighted to see that my long-time friend Dr. Novick took the time to explain the functions of each part of our gut, the consequences if our gut is not in good shape, and how to prevent gastrointestinal and liver diseases. This book combines up-to-date medical information and decades of experience of the author. It is an easy read for everyone interested in maintaining gut health or in keeping gut ailments away."
