Dr. David Novick
David M. Novick, MD was born in New York, NY. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Duke University, Durham, NC, and his MD from State University of New York – Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY. He completed a Fellowship in Hepatology (liver disease) at the Royal Free Hospital, London, England, and a Gastroenterology Fellowship at the Yale University-affiliated Norwalk Hospital, Norwalk, CT.
For 12 years, he was on the full-time staff of Beth Israel Medical Center, New York, NY, where his work focused on hepatology and addictive diseases. During this time he began an association with the Laboratory for the Biology of Addictive Diseases at The Rockefeller University, New York, NY; he is currently a guest investigator there and continues his research interest and advocacy for treatment of addiction. He was director of the Methadone Medical Maintenance program at Beth Israel from 1983-91. Dr. Novick is board-certified in internal medicine, gastroenterology, and addiction medicine.
For the past 30 years, Dr. Novick has been in the private practice of gastroenterology with Digestive Specialists, Inc. in Dayton, OH. Until November 2020, he routinely performed colonoscopy and upper GI endoscopy. He is proud to say that his adenoma detection rate, a major measure of quality for colonoscopy, was way above national benchmarks. Dr. Novick has a special interest in liver disease and especially antiviral therapy for hepatitis B and C. He is Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. He has also authored more than 70 medical publications on hepatitis B, C, and D, liver cirrhosis, HIV infection, colon polyps, medication-assisted treatment of opioid addiction, and related topics. Dr. Novick is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians, the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, and the American Society of Addiction Medicine and a member of several GI and addiction organizations.
Dr. Novick's first book, "A Gastroenterologist's Guide to Gut Health: Everything You Need to Know About Colonoscopy, Digestive Diseases, and Healthy Eating," was published in 2017. He attended the Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop in Dayton, OH in 2012 and 2014 and received an honorable mention in the 2014 Erma Bombeck Writing Competition (read the essay). He also has attended seminars sponsored by Thurber House in Columbus, OH and by the Antioch Writers’ Workshop. Dr. Novick is currently working on a book that will tell the stories of people who have recovered from opioid use disorder using medications.
Aside from writing, Dr. Novick enjoys the art of photography, with his camera tending to focus on animals in their natural habitat.
